The first thing that caught my eye was gleaming golden potato chips spelling out the word "happiness." There they were, hundreds of them suspended from a wall in the Pro Arts Gallery, subverting nature and junk food to remind us that appearances can be deceiving. Like many of the other 33 works selected for the new Pro Arts show by independent curator Sherman Sam, "happiness" communicates openly.

The potato chips look so sunny and innocent hanging there on the white wall, beckoning with the promise to make us radiate with happiness from inside with each bite of pop culture ambrosia. But they're lying.

That is the trick Adam Green plays in his conceptual piece from which the title of the juried show gets its name. Piedmont oncologist Dr. Maurice Wolin, who challenged his prosecution in connection with a sexual predator sting operation in Petaluma in August 2006, pleaded no contest this afternoon in Sonoma County Superior Court to attempting to commit a lewd or lascivious act with a child under age 14.

Wolin, 50, agreed to plead no contest to the felony charge in return for a 90-day county jail term and three years probation. He will be sentenced Feb. 26. Conviction of the felony carries a state prison term. Mens Tiffany Rings

Judge Arthur Wick said Wolin could apply for an alternative to serving the county jail term. Alternatives typically include home confinement or community service. Wick said Wolin could not withdraw his no contest plea if those alternatives are not available to him.
